Scouts & Guides

Sir Robert Baden-Powell, former Lieutenant General in the British Army, founded the scout movement in 1907 in England. Today, scout and guide organisations are in 216 countries around the world. And in Spain, particularly in Catalonia, scouting and guiding are popular. The names for scouts and guides can vary quite dramatically: ‘exploradores’, ‘guías / guies’ and ‘escoltesare all possibilities. Being aware of the different terms for scout groups will make it easier when looking for groups to join. In Catalonia, a scout group is often referred to as an ‘agrupació escolta’ or association of ‘l’escoltisme’ (scouting). Escoltes Catalans (Catalan Scouts, 93 268 91 10, www.escoltes.org) and Acció Escolta de Catalunya (Scout Action of Catalonia, www.accioescolta.org) are key scout associations in the region, providing useful contact details and links to the many groups in and around Barcelona. The website will direct you to your nearest scout or guide group.
