Skateboarding

Barcelona is a skater’s paradise. Smooth pavements, ramped walkways, beachfront promenades, granite benches and graded banks have earned the city a reputation as one of the hottest skateboarding destinations in Europe. Skateboarding over street furniture is technically illegal, being caught can land you a fine of up to €750. Rarely does it come to this though. Occasionally, sessions end with police telling skaters to move on, and in the worst-case scenario, the odd board may be confiscated. Around the MACBA museum, you can see flips, 360s, grinds and radically ambitious jumps executed day and night, with varying degrees of finesse. Pros and eager amateurs, some armed with video cameras, come to try their luck on the museum’s skater-friendly paved surfaces. Other popular hangouts include Port Olímpic, Plaça Universitat, El Fòrum, Parallel and Sants-Estació. There is a skate park in Poble Nou (Pamplona 88, Mon-Sat 10:00-14:00, 16:00-20:00) where you can grind all day long without any hassle. If you need a board or accessories, visit La General Surfera Surf Shop (93 209 05 39, Balmes 308) which sells longboards, skateboards and snakeboards, or the newly-opened Cub Skateboards (93 459 13 99, www.cubskateshop.com, Torrent de L’Olla 46).
