Environmental Groups
Spain suffers heavily from drought and desertification. The most recent campaign to reduce traffic pollution is Bicing and it is expected to encourage people to adopt greener methods of transport while getting fit at the same time. For those who want to be actively involved in environmental campaigns, there are many organisations to join. Greenpeace (93 310 13 00, barcelona@greenpeace.es) is a good starting point. Club Universal Amics del Arbres (Friends of the Trees Club, 93 442 76 44, amicsdelarbres@yahoo.es) organises regular activities and excursions. Failing that, the Generalitat (www.gencat.net/mediamb) provides a list of environmental groups in each area. Online environmental communities are an increasingly popular way of keeping up to date with climate change concerns and new sustainable technology. Treehugger (www.treehugger.com) is an important reference, providing news on ecological breakthroughs in the domains of design (industrial and interior), architecture, transport, fashion and food.
