Chess

Chess is a popular activity in Berlin, and is played casually in many plazas, outdoor locations and bars. For a full listing of clubs in Berlin (which are usually organised by neighbourhood), check out the World Chess Federation (www.fide.com), the Berliner Schach Verband (www.berlinerschachverband.de) or the Deutscher Schachbund (www.schachbund.de). Typical for Berlin, there is also a team for gay and lesbian chess players (www.queer-springer.de). For competitive play, check out the Chess League, or Schachbundesliga (www.schachbundesliga.de). The Chess Olympics was held in nearby Dresden in 2008.
