Rollerblading & Rollerskating

Rollerskating and rollerblading are fun alternatives to cycling or running, and both have a following in Berlin. Skate Night Berlin (www.skate-night-berlin) is a relatively new phenomenon, where every Sunday night from May to September different routes throughout the city are closed to traffic, and skaters, sometimes numbering up to 9,000, take over. This is a free event that starts at 19:30 and usually ends around midnight. The Berlin Parade (www.berlinparade.de) organises group skates, although these are for the more advanced, and are intended to support skaters’ rights in the city. There are a number of rollerskating and rollerblading rinks in Berlin. The largest, Fläming Skate (www.flaeming-skate.de), lies just outside the city. Apart from the large rink, where competitions and parties are held, the best feature is the Fläming Skate, a 190km circular path through the Brandenburg countryside, which stops at various towns along the way. There are a number of ways to arrange routes of varying difficulty, and you can rent skates before setting out.
