Gardening
Berlin is a sprawling city, offering ample space and opportunity to gardeners. Given German mania for ‘bio products’, it should come as no surprise that organic farming is quite popular. The most old-fashioned way to garden is to rent a cottage at a Schrebergärten, or gardening colony, of which Berlin has about 100. Rules, including barring people from living in the maintenance huts, are quite strict. Because there are so many colonies, renting a plot of land for yourself is not usually difficult, and you can expect to pay about €100 per month. Their locations are usually listed under Kleingartenkolonien on the back of detailed street maps or check www.cic-berlin.de for the nearest location. Most gardening is done on an individual or family basis, with green social events usually reserved for environmental groups. Guerilla gardening is the exception. A formerly secret and subversive way of utilising urban space to make a political statement, the movement is now slightly tamer, with events announced on the internet. See www.gruenewelle.org for more details.
