Berlin is a famously musical city, with a proud tradition of everything from opera to laptop DJs. Most organised instruction is in classical music, with rock, jazz and other musicians getting together for gigs at bars and clubs. Large neighbourhoods host one of twelve state-supported Bezirkliche Musikschule, or local music schools. These have community orchestras and choirs, offer group and individual instruction, and rent instruments for €6 per month. More advanced musicians often join university orchestras and choirs. These are free, with some aimed at older musicians. It is not necessary to be a student to join.
