Running
Berlin is a fabulous city in which to run. The most obvious places are the parks, but don’t rule out urban running. In most neighbourhoods (with the possible exception of Prenzlauer Berg), the streets are wide enough to make city exploration a fun way to add variety to a running routine. This can also be combined with greener routes in the Tiergarten and or Landeswehrkanal in Kreuzberg. The Real Berlin Marathon, held each September, is an exciting event that usually attracts more than a million spectators. While extremely gruelling, the course is favoured by some because the city is so flat. There are other, shorter, equally fun races, including the popular Vattenfall Half Marathon held in April. Check the SCC website for race details (www.scc-events.com). The German website of Runner’s World magazine (www.runnersworld.de) is a good resource for training advice and race dates. Having company can be a great motivator; even if you don’t want to commit to a running group, check out www.lauftreff.de for meet-ups with fellow runners in your area.
